Hockey is by far the most popular sport in Canada. The National Hockey League (commonly known as the NHL) is well known to the average Canadian. The National Hockey League contains 30 teams, 7 of which are Canadian with the reminder being American. Although a team is American it is very common for more than a third of a team to have Canadians players.

The teams are split between two conferences: The Eastern Conference and the Western Conference.

Canada consistently performs well in Olympic Hockey usually facing counties such as Russia, America, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Canada contains more fresh water lakes than any other country.

Major Cities in the Northern Territories

Although towns exist in the Northern Territories most non-nomadic people in the region live in Whitehorse, in the Yukon Territory, Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories and Iqaluit in Nunavut.

The largest of these cities is Whitehorse which had a population of 23,276 in 2011. Despite being the territorial capital of Nunavut, the Municipality of Iqaluit has a population of less than ten thousand.

Major Cities in Western Canada

Like in other parts of Canada all major cities are in the southern half of the Provinces. Edmonton is Canada's northern most major city (excluding the northern territories.) The British Colombian cities of Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and Abbotsford make south-western British Columbia the most densely populated area outside of the Greater Toronto Area.
